3D Printed Drone by Flirtey Delivers a Domino’s Pizza

Dominos Pizza Flirteys DroneWe are all guilty on this one. Yes, even you. Some of us more than others!

We’ve all called the Pizza delivery guy (at least once) and had them deliver some nice delicious pizza for us, while seated at home on the couch feeling warm and lazy. After all, who doesn’t love pizza?

Now thanks to Flirtey’s new delivery technology, instead of seeing your usual pizza delivery guy at your door the next time you make an order; your new delivery ‘guy’ could simply be a Drone. Flirtey and Domino’s Pizza Enterprises have entered into a partnership to facilitate the world’s first commercial pizza-by-drone delivery model.

This partnership commenced with a demonstration by the two companies on how pizza could practically be delivered by drone to all Domino’s customers. The demonstration was done in Auckland, New Zealand on the 25th of August 2016. During the demonstration, the Drone carried out an autonomous flight to deliver hot pizza at a delivery site in Auckland, lowering the pizza by tether onto a picnic basket that was set to act as the delivery point.

This one of a kind demonstration of advanced drone technology was attended by the New Zealand Transport Minister Simon Bridges and the Civil Aviation Authority among other dignitaries.

The test was conducted under the Civil Aviation Rules Part 101 and played a crucial role in the Flirtey’s approval process, which formed a benchmark that will see the partnership effectively authorize flights of Flirtey drones to customer homes later this year from select stores in New Zealand.

According to the two partners, New Zealand was the ideal location to launch their new drone-based pizza delivery model because as Flirtey CEO, Matt Sweeny said:

“New Zealand has the most forward-thinking aviation regulations in the world”

But the US is still not left behind. Sweeny went on to add that:

“With the new U.S. drone regulations taking effect on Aug. 29, Flirtey is uniquely positioned to bring the same revolutionary Flirtey drone delivery service to partners within the United States.”

Domino’s Innovative Delivery Methods

Even though this partnership with Flirtey to deliver pizza by drone has painted Domino’s in a whole new light, the truth is this isn’t the first time the company is experimenting with Robotic pizza delivery. Domino’s has been frequently investing in new and innovative delivery methods which includes the famous DRU – Domino’s Robotic Unit.

The DRU is a land-based delivery robot which pretty much does the same thing that the Flirtey drone is expected to achieve. The only difference is that the Flirtey drone guarantees air-based pizza delivery service, which is definitely an upgrade to the DRU.

Flirtey Drone Design

The Flirtey drone is mainly made of aluminium, carbon fibre and some 3D Printed Components. It’s an unmanned aerial vehicle that is autonomous, lightweight and electrically driven. On arriving at delivery destinations, the drone is designed to lower its cargo through tether and comes with a few built-in safety features.

For instance, in case of low battery, the drone is set to return to safe location and it can also automatically return home (which is the store it was dispatched from) in case there is loss of communication or low GPS signal.

There’s no doubt that with this Drone delivery system, Domino’s and Flirtey are both targeting to attract a new generation of customers as the world steps into a new age of consumer goods delivery fuelled by the ever rapidly advancing technology.

Group CEO and Managing Director of Domino’s Pizza Enterprises, Don Meij, said that:

“Partnering with Flirtey to revolutionize the delivery experience is an achievement that will set our company apart in the minds of customers and change the way delivery is conducted around the world. Domino’s customers can expect the freshest and fastest pizza delivery service at the same quality they have come to expect from us thanks to Flirtey’s industry-leading technology.”

Apparently, the Flirtey drone delivery technology uses state-of-the-art packaging that is able to retain the temperature and taste of freshly cooked Pizza during the entire delivery process which could take 30 minutes or less. Flirtey CEO Sweeny confidently said:

“Launching the first commercial drone delivery service in the world is a landmark achievement for Flirtey and Domino’s, soon you will be able to order a Flirtey to deliver your pizza on-demand.”

For a company that is primarily focused on innovating delivery like Domino’s, the autonomous technology Flirtey brings on board is certainly an asset that could skyrocket the company’s success.

On the other hand, working with a big company like Domino’s is definitely the right kind of partnership that a company like Flirtey needs.

Keeping in mind that Domino’s has more than 2,000 stores in seven markets around the world including: Australia, New Zealand, Belgium, France, Japan, Netherlands and Germany.
